About Us

The Black Ceramics Centre (BCC) – is a non-governmental organisation, established in 1995. During 1995 – 2000 the Centre has organised 5 international Black ceramics Symposia, attended by 25 foreign and 20 Lithuanian artists. Since 2000 centre is in the Lithuanian National UNESCO Club. The BCC is located in the Old Town of Vilnius city.

The black ceramics is the unique heritage of ancient Lithuania. This
technique was used since the Neolitic Age to produce anthropomorphic
urns and other cult vessels
In the first century AD numerous black ceramics finds were excavated
in the territory along the Baltic Sea – they belonged to one of the
most powerful Baltic tribes – the Prussians.
Since the 13th century, following the formation of the Grand Duchy of
Lithuania, this firing method was popular not only in the territory of
Lithuania, but also in other territories during its rule in the Slavic
lands. During the Medieval Times, the black ceramics dinnerware was on
the tables of the wealthy residents of Vilnius.
These ceramics objects are fired in reduction kilns without any
additives or glaze, so it is one of the most ecological ceramics.
Lithuania is one of the few countries in Europe where the black
ceramics still prosper. The Black Ceramics Centre was established in
Vilnius in 1995.
Since 2004 the centre participates in the program of fine crafts, ethnographic trades and fairs initiated by Vilnius City Council (OLD TOWN RENEWAL AGENCY, http://www.vsaa.lt/index.php/en/)
